Heart Preparation

For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power and love and sound mind.

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God:

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling,

not according to our works,

but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

2 Tim 1:7-9

Mt Henry's note:

Of Paul to Timothy: He exhorts him to count upon afflictions, and get ready for them. Be thou not ashamed of the gospel.

(These words of Paul to Timothy are in stark contrast to the messages from many American pulpits today. We need to be feeding from and hearing the true Gospel every day, preparing our hearts to share it wherever the occasion arises.)

Mt Henry's note:

Paul was the Lord's prisoner. For His sake he was bound with a chain. If we are ashamed of either now, Christ will be ashamed of us hereafter. "Expect afflictions for the gospel's sake, be willing to take thy lot with the suffering saints in this world. "Be partakers of the afflicitons of the gospel."
